2020 in Socks: 3/12

One of my resolutions at the beginning of the year was to make this the year of sock knitting. I made a total of one (1) pair of socks in 2019 (although I started another), but I thought to make bigger effort this year to make more socks. The dream would be for all my socks to be handmade, but that probably won't happen this year — no matter how much knitting time I suddenly have. However, I have made good progress. I didn't have a specific number in mind of how many socks to make but I've been averaging 1 a month, so starting today I am setting a goal for 12 socks in 12 months!

LEFT TO RIGHT: 1. Gemology Socks; 2. Strawberry Lemonade Socks; 3. Baby-Doll Socks

  1. Gemology Socks by Sadie Bellegarda-Anderson — So in the excitement of deciding to knit socks this year, I signed up for a SockCrate subscription (from KnitCrate). This was the January pattern, which I made in the included yarn, Knitologie Cabled Sock in Cadet. I made the second size, but I think I could have just done the smallest size as these were slightly too wide for me. The pattern was absolutely wonderful! The two-stitch cables meant I could do it without a cable needle, which saved time and hassle and made it easy to learn; by the end i was no longer referencing the printed booklet. This also called for a longer leg, but counting by 8-row repeats made it pass a lot faster (ie, 5 repeats of the pattern as opposed to 30 rows). I would definitely make these socks again.
  2. Strawberry Lemonade Socks — I didn't use a pattern for this pair, I was just excited to use the yarns I got from So Much Yarn in Seattle. I called these Strawberry Lemonade because that's what the colorway reminded me at the store, but it knit up to more of a sunset look with some hot pink (the color is in fact called "Sunset Strip").
  3. Baby-Doll Socks — I used the pink accents from the Strawberry Lemonade Socks with some white Bernat DK yarn that I had already. These were toe-up socks so I had to find a tutorial as to how to make the heel. Although I do like how it turned out, I don't think I'd use it again because the contrast isn't really the heel and is more like the Achilles' tendon. One thing that I was pleasantly surprised by was the cuff: I just did a short ribbing pattern, but it looks more like ruffles! That's why I call these babydoll socks, and if I make this again I'd like to try to exaggerate this effect.
